Smartphone cameras are evolving and there are still a few years left until we see high-end phones, not completely but at least some replacing DSLRs. Recently the CEO of Sony had also said the same thing. However, until now, we haven’t seen all the technology in professional cameras on smartphones. Yes, we’ve seen insane 1-inch sensors on phones like the Sony Xperia Pro 1 and Sharp Aquos R6.

However, both did not turn out to be so impressive. Now, all eyes are on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra which is set to release on July 4. Interestingly, the phone has been launched with a 1-inch type sensor, but it is not the same sensor that Sony and Sharp smartphones had.

The Xiaomi 12S Ultra is confirmed to come with Sony IMX989 sensor. IMX989 will be Sony’s flagship sensor with a sensor size of 1-inch. And this is what Xiaomi is betting on. But what effect will this have on the consumer?

How will the 1-inch sensor on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra impress you?

Several reports in the past have said that the IMX989 used in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra will be a 50MP lens. The high megapixel lens is the main attraction of the phone’s camera.

For the unversed, 1-inch sensor size is not common on smartphones. Sensors of this size are used in professional cameras. A few years back, some smartphone companies started launching phones with such sensor sizes. Although brands like Panasonic announced technology for phones in 2014, that never really materialized.

Those that functioned like the Xperia Pro 1 and the Sharp Aquos R6 were limited by megapixels. For example, the Sony Xperia Pro 1 sports a custom 1-inch type sensor but has a 12-megapixel lens. Similar was the case with the Sharp Aquos R6, which featured a 20-megapixel lens, which is again limiting the sensor’s prowess.

Now, the 50-megapixel optics on the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is expected to be better assisted by a 1-inch sensor. Since it is a bigger sensor, as well as higher megapixel count, consumers can expect better pictures. This will also help users to take better low-light shots. Although aperture plays a part in the phone’s low-light capability, the size of the sensor helps too. Plus, higher megapixels will provide a sharper image.

Having only a 1-inch sensor, the camera of the smartphone will not be great. And only a higher megapixel lens isn’t going to help. But when both sensor size and higher megapixels are added, the end results are better.

This is why iPhone cameras shoot better pictures than most Android phones. For example, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is the newest iPhone at the moment, has a 12MP lens and the sensor size of the lens is 1/1.65.

If we compare it with the OnePlus 10 Pro, which doesn’t perform well even after having a Hasselblad lens, it has a 50MP lens with a sensor size of 1/2.76. Here, although the camera is of 50MP, the sensor size is a limitation.

So, the 50MP lens paired with a 1-inch sensor should offer better pictures during day as well as night time. In addition, there is also the Leica branding, so overall, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra appears to have stable camera hardware and will affect how you shoot photos and videos.

Coming to the video, the higher megapixels and sensor size, as well as the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset will make up the video of the phone. The chipset supports 8K video recording at 30FPS and 4K video recording at 120FPS.

That said, if you are a camera buff or even a regular user, you should be able to get decent pictures and videos from the Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
