WhatsApp is quite a popular messaging app which keeps updating itself by using new features. While some of these features are simple upgrades to existing features, others are new features that bring new functionality into the mix. Now, a new report states that the Meta-owned messaging app has started working on a new feature that will make it easier for users to switch devices.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, a chat blog on development in WhatsApp, the company is developing a new feature called ‘Chat Transfer’. This feature will allow users to transfer their data from one Android device to another without having to back up their chats on Google Drive.
The blog site says that the process to switch devices and transfer all chat data is fairly simple without using Google Drive. Once the feature is available, users will first need to download and install WhatsApp on their new Android smartphone, open WhatsApp on the new phone, and then scan the QR code provided to initiate chat history migration to the new Android device.
While the blog site doesn’t detail what method the messaging app will deploy in the background, it’s not hard to guess that the feature will use some sort of local network to transfer data from one device to another. Such a system would remove the need for Google Drive to be used as an intermediary storage platform as it would ensure that data transfer takes place in real time. To understand, the process would be somewhat similar to how you transfer photos stored in your smartphone to an external hard disk without storing those photos on your laptop, which has both the devices, i.e. your phone and your external hard disk. are linked.
As far as availability is concerned, the blog site They say As of now, the feature is being developed for Android devices by WhatsApp and there is no word on the timeline of the launch in the main app. While there is no word on the feature’s development for WhatsApp’s iOS app, it is not hard to guess that the company will bring the feature to iPhones sometime in the future.
