Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature – “WhatsApp username”, which will let users choose unique usernames for their accounts.

According to WABetaInfo, with this feature, users will be able to opt for a unique and memorable username instead of relying only on phone numbers to identify contacts.

The company may also provide users with the ability to contact others by entering a username within the app without knowing their phone number.

Furthermore, the report states that the company is working on introducing the feature within the app settings, specifically, a section dedicated to the feature will be available within WhatsApp Settings > Profile.

The report states that with the ability to choose a username, WhatsApp users will be able to add an extra layer of privacy to their accounts.

Currently, the WhatsApp username feature is under development and will be released to beta testers in future updates of the app.

Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that WhatsApp’s billion users can now modify a message within 15 minutes of sending it.

The feature has rolled out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks. Users will have to long press the sent message and then select ‘Edit’ from the menu for 15 minutes.
