Google has announced new privacy features and changes for under-18s who use Search, YouTube, Google Images and other platforms offered by technology giants. The biggest announcement is that soon anyone under the age of 18 or their parents will be able to request the removal of their picture from Google Image results. This privacy feature will be launched next week.
The technology giant has announced new privacy features and changes for other platforms under the age of 18 in the coming weeks and months on more platforms including YouTube, Search, Assistant, Play.
New privacy features are coming soon
Google has announced that YouTube will soon change the default upload setting to the most personal option available for 13-17 year olds. The video streaming platform will also get a number of digital welfare features and provide protection and education about commercial content. Soon, the platform will “take a break and turn on reminders while sleeping and turn off autoplay for users under 18”. In YouTube Kids, there is an autoplay option and it will be turned off by default.
Tech Giant has announced the introduction of the SafeSearch feature for existing signed-in users under the age of 18 and the default setting for teens to set up new accounts. Google’s SafeSearch feature helps filter out explicit results when enabled, and by default for all signed-in users under the age of 13 who have an account managed by FamilyLink.
In addition, new default protections are coming to the assistant in the coming days. For example, the technology giant will implement secure search technology in web browsers on smart displays. “We’re always working with Google Assistant on shared devices to prevent them from publishing mature content during the child’s experience, and we’ll be introducing new default protection in the coming months,” Google said.
The agency also said it would expand security measures to prevent age-sensitive advertising sections from being shown to teenagers. Google has announced that it will block ad targeting for people under the age of 18 based on their age, gender or interests.
Google has said it will roll out these updates to products worldwide over the next few months. “Our goal is to ensure that we provide additional protection and provide an age-appropriate experience for Google ads,” the company said.
