After months of leaks and teasers, the Toyota Innova Hycross has finally been launched in India. The new hybrid multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) is a rebranded Innova Genix that was introduced in Indonesia earlier this year. But for India, the Highcross is an entirely new model, featuring the company’s monocoque construction. With a fuel efficiency of 21.1kpl, the Innova Highcross also brings Toyota’s ADAS technology to India, making it one of the safest cars.
Toyota Innova Highcross Design
The design of the new Toyota Innova Highcross is similar to Genix. The upright grille on the fascia gives it an SUV-like appearance, somewhat similar to the Corolla Cross that is sold in the international markets. The sides of the Innova Hycross along with the long rear door give it an MPV look. But interestingly, it also looks similar to Toyota’s Veloze MPV, which is available in select international markets. The new MPV gets a large glasshouse with 10-spoke alloys.
The interior design of the Innova Highcross is completely different from the Crysta. There is a multi-layered dashboard with a digital instrument cluster with a semi-digital 4.2-inch MID display. You also get a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen display for infotainment. There’s a dashboard-mounted gear lever console that sits between the front seats. While the base variant of the Innova Hycross features a single colour, the higher variants come with a dual-tone finish of brown and black with dark chestnut seat upholstery.
Toyota Innova Highcross Variants & Features
The higher models of the Toyota Innova Highcross come with paddle shifters, connected car technology, 9-speakers JBL audio system, ambient lighting, multi-zone climate control and a powered tailgate. And for the first time in any Innova model, there is a panoramic sunroof. The Innova Highcross has 7- and 8-seat layouts, with the former including two captain’s chairs in the middle row with ottoman function and a bench seat for the third row, while the latter has bench seats for the second and third rows. The Innova Highcross gets three-point seatbelts for all passengers.
Toyota’s new Innova Highcross gets petrol and hybrid powertrain options, but no diesel engine option. Toyota’s fifth-generation M20A-FXS strong-hybrid powertrain using strong hybrid technology has a capacity of 2 liters. The engine uses the Atkinson or Miller cycle for better fuel efficiency, making 152hp and 187Nm of torque. With the electric motor, combined power output jumps to 186hp. Without the hybrid, the same 1,987cc engine makes 174hp and 197Nm. Both the powertrains are mated to a CVT gearbox, with the driver not having the option of a manual transmission.
For the hybrid powertrain, Toyota claims a fuel efficiency of 21.1kpl, which gives a range of 1097km on a full fuel tank.
Toyota Innova Highcross launch and expected price
Toyota has not yet revealed the price of the Innova Highcross, but the company has said that it will reveal the prices in January next year. It is being speculated that the Toyota Innova Highcross will be available for around Rs 22 lakh and Rs 28 lakh.
