An Apple ID is required to use an iOS device. The ID can be linked to the trusted devices list in the Apple ecosystem. But if you are planning to upgrade to a new Apple device then you will want to remove the Apple ID from your old device.

Deleting a device from your Apple ID ends the device’s ability to perform functions associated with your Apple Account. The device will not receive any notifications sent to the Apple account or connected to iCloud. If you are unable to transfer your old device to your Apple account for the new one, here is how you can remove it.
