5G services are now rolling out in select locations in India, but they won’t work unless you have a compatible phone. Even though the market is flooded with 5G phones at price points, you can’t use next-generation wireless services until you configure the network settings. Some phones may also require a software update. One of the leading smartphone brands, Realme has reportedly started rolling out a new firmware version for its smartphones to enable Jio 5G services.

Several users took to Twitter to report that their Realme phone is now receiving an unexpected software update that brings support for Jio 5G. spotty By 91Mobiles, the tweets also contain screenshots of the software update page, which mentions that the new software version changes the network to support Jio’s 5G network. “5G network function is supported for Jio,” it says. The update also brings the September 2022 Android security patch and improves system performance and stability.

Realme is apparently rolling out the new software for all 5G smartphones, regardless of their cost. This means that if you have a Realme phone under Rs 15,000, your phone may also support Jio 5G as soon as it is available in your location. To update, go to the phone’s Settings, then tap on Software Update. If the update is available to you, you’ll see the update available for download on your phone’s screen.

5G launch in India

At the India Mobile Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services in India in the presence of industry leaders, Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries, Sunil Bharti Mittal of Bharti Airtel and KM Birla of Aditya Birla Group. The three telcos announced that their 5G services will be available in select locations from today. While Airtel will introduce 5G in eight cities today, Jio may launch its 5G services in Ahmedabad and Varanasi. Vodafone Idea did not specify but did inform customers in certain circles about the network upgrade.
