Realme 10 Pro+ 5G review: It’s bling, brains and bloatware

Realme recently introduced the Realme 10 Pro+ 5G in India. The phone is part of the company’s Realme 10 Pro series, and is the successor to the Realme 9 Pro+ smartphone (Review) who came to India earlier this year. With a smarter display, more efficient cameras and faster charging technology, the realme 10 Pro+ 5G not only offers a significant upgrade over its predecessor, but also helps the company leapfrog into the premium mid-budget smartphone segment.

The phone sports a 120Hz AMOLED display, 108MP primary camera, supports 67W Super VOOC fast charging technology and MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 5G chipset at its core – all of which give the phone enough boost to be a winner in its price-segment . But are these facilities enough? We’ll find out in the detailed review below. So, keep reading!

Realme 10 Pro+ 5G: Design

Realme Pro+ 5G comes in three color variants – Dark Matter, Nebula Blue and Hyperspace Gold variant, which we got for review. The first thing that comes to your mind when you take a quick look at the phone is the 90s disco ball (yes, the one we all saw in several Rishi Kapoor and Mithun Da songs). The phone sports a shiny gold polycarbonate back with a pattern that radiates from the camera setup. Shine some light on it and you will see that the phone becomes dazzling. If 90s glam is your thing, you will surely appreciate the design of the phone. If not, you’re probably like me who believes minimalism to be the key to great design. But talk about it some other time. Bling or not, the back of the phone is a fingerprint magnet and cleaning it is not at all easy.

Beyond all the gold and glitter, the Realme 10 Pro+ maintains Realme’s design language. It has the volume rocker and power button on the right, the SIM card tray, a USB Type-C port for charging, and a speaker and microphone at the bottom, along with a microphone at the top. If you have used a Realme smartphone in the past, then you are no stranger to this and should have no problem adjusting to it.

While I may not be a fan of the colour, what I like about the phone is its overall design, which is extremely comfortable to hold and use even during prolonged use. The sleek profile coupled with the curved edge display not only gives the phone a more premium appeal, but also makes for a comfortable user experience.

Realme 10 Pro+ 5G: Display

Realme has given a significant boost to the Realme 10 Pro+ 5G as compared to its predecessor. The phone sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2412 x 1080 pixels, screen refresh rate of 120HZ, touch sampling rate of 360Hz, peak brightness of 800 nits, and reinforced glass protection. The phone comes with HDR 10+ certification and 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut. In contrast, the Realme 9 Pro+ 5G comes with a 6.4-inch 90Hz AMOLED with Full HD+ resolution and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Specifications apart, the realme 10 Pro+ 5G offers a gorgeous display that makes the viewing experience comfortable and enjoyable. I used the phone to watch series like Reacher on Prime Video and Dream Home Makeover on Netflix. During the time I spent with the phone, I found that colors were mostly accurate with good contrast and clarity. Overall, the experience was enjoyable despite the phone missing Widevine L1 support, which is key to a good Netflix experience.

Experience aside, the Realme 10 Pro+ 5G has an in-display fingerprint sensor for security. While the fingerprint scanner is a tad underwhelming for my liking, it does a decent job of unlocking the phone every time. Additionally, the display is fully visible even in bright sunlight, which adds to its overall appeal.

Realme 10 Pro+ 5G: Camera

Now, let’s talk a bit about the cameras.

The Realme 10 Pro+ 5G comes with a triple rear camera setup that includes a 108MP 6P lens with 83.63-degree viewing angle, an 8MP 5P lens with 112-degree viewing angle, and a 2MP macro sensor. On the front, it has a 16MP in-display selfie camera. It offers a minor upgrade over the Realme 9 Pro+ with a 50MP + 8MP + 2MP camera setup at the rear and a 16MP selfie camera at the front. In our review of the Realme 9 Pro+, we said that the phone offers decent camera performance and is one of the best camera phones in its price segment. The Realme 10 Pro+ has largely kept up with the trend.

All three cameras on the realme 10 Pro+ 5G deliver exceptional depth clarity and are capable of capturing details and shadows even in low-light environments. There is absolutely no blurriness or color bleed at the edges. However, images are a bit brighter and saturated. This might not actually be a bad thing, especially if you plan to use the phone for clicking Insta-worthy images. What I love about this phone is that it manages to retain most of its clarity even in low-light environments – which I think is a tough nut to crack.

The front camera of the phone is equally capable of taking selfies, especially in sunlight. It captures colors, details and shadows very well. You can also retouch parts of your face or add filters, all of which are fine.

Realme 10 Pro+ 5G: Performance

Now let’s talk about performance.

realme 10 Pro+ 5G is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 1080 system-on-chip coupled with up to 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage space, and up to 8GB of dynamic RAM. Specifications aside, the Realme 10 Pro+ 5G is capable of handling almost anything you throw at it with ease. It’s especially reliable as your daily driver, and it doesn’t overheat, slow down or throw a nervous tantrum, even when you overload it with tasks under the sun.

On the software front, the phone runs Android 13-based Realme UI 4.0. This UI brings a host of new features to the phone like card-style cleaner layout, more interactive Always-on-Display feature, larger folders and home screen widgets. Overall, the UI layout aims to increase functionality and minimize the app drawer. However, the phone is loaded with bloatware which takes up a lot of unnecessary space in the app drawer and storage. The good thing is that these apps can be easily removed from the phone. But it’s still a hassle because there are so many apps that need to be discarded.

Realme 10 Pro+ 5G: Battery

Talking about the battery, the Realme 10 Pro+ 5G packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 67W SuperVOOC fast charging technology. In terms of usage, the phone easily lasts a day if you are using it for your daily chores. My typical day includes one to two hours of social media time and three to four hours of OTT viewing time (you can judge me on the latter!) along with office emails, messages and calls and by the end of the day , the phone still had enough juice to last through the night. As far as charging is concerned, the phone went from 0 to 100 in around 50 minutes.

Should you buy Realme 10 Pro+ 5G or not?

Well, the answer to that question is a simple yes. The realme 10 Pro+ 5G is a pretty decent device that offers strong performance, decent camera quality and long battery life. Apart from that, the phone has a sleek design and premium appeal to it, all of which make it a keeper.
