No internet, no cash? How to still use UPI to send money


India is ahead of most countries in terms of digital payments. UPI is the black horse that has taken our country forward. Paying through UPI is often easier than simply withdrawing cash to your wallet or looking for change. However, India is trying to catch up in terms of network coverage as compared to other countries.

Imagine that you are trekking somewhere around a hill station and you come across a tea stall, but you realized that you are short of cash. what should you do? You take out your phone to make a payment through one of the UPI apps. But no, there is no internet connectivity. There is still a way to pay for your tea. Minimum network coverage can help you pay without any hitch.

Here are the simple steps to make UPI payments without internet

First you have to dial *99# USSD code on your phone. As soon as you do this, you will see a pop-up with different options ranging from 1 to 7. You will be asked to enter your choice. To send money, click on the relevant number and hit send.

In the following pop up you will be asked for payment mode. You can send money to eligible mobile number, UPI ID, saved beneficiary or IFSC, A/c number. Click on the respective number of the payment mode of choice.

It doesn’t get easier if the recipient’s number is registered with UPI. All you have to do is enter the eligible number and hit send. You will be asked to enter the amount and hit send again.

Once you have entered the amount, you will be asked to enter a comment, which can also be skipped. After that, you need to enter your UPI PIN and hit one last time. This should do the trick.

This mode of payment was created to make UPI more inclusive. While smartphone users often resort to well-built UPI apps, feature phone users have no choice. USSD codes provide a simple yet very effective way to pay digitally.
