The Note 2 replaces the Note 1 that Micromax launched last year. Micromax made a spectacular comeback in the Indian smartphone market with that device. The manufacturer has now introduced another variant of the same device. Does Micromax live up to its promise of better value for money with the new smartphone? let’s find out.
design
Compared to last year’s design, the new in Note 2 has evolved in terms of overall looks. The Note 2 opts for a glass-on-glass look. The smartphone also gets Gorilla Glass protection but the company hasn’t actually specified the variant.
In terms of in-hand feel, the Micromax In Note 2 has a better weight distribution and gives a more confident feel. The plastic on the camera island doesn’t protrude much but the plastic used seems to be a step below the rest of the build quality.
The phone gets flat sides, giving a more confident hold. The phone cover added to the retail unit also accentuates the sharp edges. This also becomes an essential use as the back of the device is extremely reflective and attracts fingerprints.
Display
The display is where most users will find value in the Note 2 from Micromax. The smartphone comes with an AMOLED display. Panels are not easy to come by in this price range. However, Samsung dominates this category as well.
The panel boosts contrast and colors to a much higher level than the previous generation. It gives an immersive experience to even an entry-level smartphone user.
Whereas AMOLED is a definite upgrade. Micromax didn’t opt for a fast refresh rate display, which is disappointing. More phones with at least 90Hz refresh rate are violating the budget phone category.
Deep blacks enhance daily interaction with the screen. But don’t expect an AMOLED panel like the flagships. The saturation on the Micromax In Note 2 display is increased by default. There are different ways that can help bring it down to more lucrative levels.
Display
Micromax in Note 2 comes with MediaTek Helio G95 which was launched in the year 2020. This is a definite step up from the previous generation Helio G85. However, the company is offering only the 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage variant of the Micromax Note 2.
In our usage, the phone was handling day-to-day tasks and even short gaming sessions with ease. However, we cannot be sure of the long-term effect of glasses. The device gets a dedicated memory card slot that can take up to 256GB of memory card. The internal storage of the phone is UFS2.1 which should ensure an overall smooth experience.
Note: Micromax in Note 2 keeps dropping WiFi signal sometimes. A software update should be able to fix this.
camera
The camera is nothing to write home about. In daylight, the images are brighter than in the real landscape, and the color saturation also changes completely. Overall, daylight images looked sharp but lacked precise composition.
Macro shots came out fine in bright daylight but shots in low light were simply unusable. The primary camera, which is 48MP, doesn’t really do justice to the size of the sensor. Low-light images lack details and have some artificial HDR-like effect that is being used to illuminate darker areas.

Battery
The battery is one of Micromax’s strong suits in the Note 2. The phone comes with a 5000mAh battery unit. The 30W fast charger in the box definitely helps. The company claims that it can charge up to 50 percent in just 25 minutes. Micromax In Note 2 has USB Type C charging port. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also available in the phone.
Decision
Micromax in Note 2 represents the second generation of Micromax smartphones after last year’s comeback. The company has addressed some of the problems that led to China’s dominance in the Indian smartphone market.
The Android 11 UI is completely stock, the processor may not be the latest and greatest but it does its job well. However, the brand has a long way to go in terms of camera performance. The display isn’t the best but it certainly won’t disappoint. Chinese smartphone makers have developed a strong presence in this category. Micromax may need to counter them with a more pocket-friendly offering.
As an initial offer, the price of Micromax In Note 2 has been kept at Rs 12,490. It will be available for buyers from January 30 on Flipkart and the company’s official website.
