Meta is working on a universal language translator to make socializing in the Metaverse easier

During Inside the Lab: Building for the Metaverse with AI At a livestream event on Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave a glimpse of what the Metaverse will look like. He shared the latest advancements being made by Meta AI in various areas like Self-supervised Learning and Computer Vision. Zuckerberg revealed that the company aims to create an AI-powered “universal speech translator” for the metaverse that works for everyone in the world.

According to the company, about 2 billion people, or about 25 percent of the world’s population, speak a language that does not have a translation system. To solve this problem, Meta is working on a two-way project. The first part is No Language Left Behind and the second is Universal Speech Translator.

According to company blog“The first is No Language Left Behind, where we’re building a new advanced AI model that can learn from languages with fewer examples, and we’ll use it to enable expert-quality translations in hundreds of languages, From Asturian. From Luganda to Urdu. The other is Universal Speech Translator, where we are creating novel approach to translate speech from one language to another in real time so that we can use standard writing system as well as written and Can support both spoken languages.

META faces a paucity of data which is a major obstacle for the expansion of translation tools across the world. “MT systems for text translation typically rely on learning from millions of sentences of annotated data. Because of this, MT systems capable of high-quality translations have been developed for only the handful of languages that dominate the Web. Expanding to other languages means finding ways to acquire and use training examples from languages with a sparse web presence,” wrote Facebook AI Research in a company blogpost.

With these projects, Meta aims to improve translations so that people who speak different or lesser-known languages can more easily socialize in the Metaverse.

To ease socializing in the Metaverse, Meta is working on a universal language translator that first appeared on BGR India.
