Maruti Suzuki has revealed plans to introduce a new SUV earlier this month. The company has revealed that it will be a mid-sized SUV, most likely, a cross-badged version of the Toyota Urban Cruiser Haider that launched today. The Maruti Suzuki SUV will compete with the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, which are two cars made by their South Korean counterparts.
A report by HT Auto claims that the new SUV will be unveiled in the third week of July. This news broke the same day Toyota India unveiled the Hyryder SUV. The report quoted Shashank Srivastava, senior executive director of marketing and sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited as saying, “Yes, we will be unveiling our mid-size SUV in the third week of July. The production of the model will take place in August and we will take it from there. This segment is huge, accounting for 18 per cent of the total market. Maruti’s share in the non-SUV segment is 67 per cent but if you look at the overall market share, it has come down to below 50 per cent. This is mainly because we have a low market share within SUVs.
Currently, Maruti offers Maruti Suzuki Brezza and S-Cross only in the SUV segment. While the brand still easily holds the maximum market share in India, it is missing from the SUV segment due to lack of options. Maruti’s new SUV may give the brand the necessary teeth it needs to bite into the growing pie of the SUV segment in overall automobile sales.
While Maruti has remained tight-lipped about this new vehicle, we can speculate that it will be pitted against the industry leaders Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The Hyryder will also soon enter the segment with a strong hybrid powertrain offering. However, Maruti is expected to sell the cross-badged SUV with a mild-hybrid powertrain, as seen in other Maruti cars like the new Brezza. The name of the SUV may take the brand name of Vitara which was dropped by the Brezza.
