According to the company’s new Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi, the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki will launch several electric vehicle models in India. The company also plans to produce electric vehicles from its factories in the future, when the demand for electric vehicles in the country will increase.
To begin with, the first EV will be produced from the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant. “We are a little behind our competitors in introducing (EV) models in the Indian market, but we see that still, the market demand for those EVs is limited. In fact, the sales of electric vehicles in the Indian market are still very limited.
According to the new MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, that the Indian EV market is growing, it is very small and the market share of EVs will be only 10 percent by 2030.
“But that doesn’t mean we’re not doing anything about EVs. We did a lot of extensive testing of our EVs using our existing models and putting those batteries and motors and everything into this current model We have been testing this for over a year with many cars in the Indian environment so that we can be sure that our EV technology will be good in the environment, which is very difficult in India,” he said.
Suzuki has already developed a lithium-ion battery pack production unit at Hansalpur in Gujarat in a joint venture with Japanese companies Denso Corp and Toshiba.
According to FADA, Tata Motors led the electric passenger vehicle segment in 2021-22 with a market share of 85.37 per cent in retail and vertical with 15,198 units. Total electric passenger vehicle retail sales stood at 17,802 in the last fiscal, more than three times from 4,984 units in FY11, the latest data from the industry body showed.
The carmaker has hiked the prices across all model line-ups with immediate effect due to cost escalation. The company, which has a wide range of affordable vehicles in its portfolio ranging from Alto to Vitara Brezza.
