India will soon get another expressway that will reduce the distance between the two most important cities of Uttar Pradesh. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari will lay the foundation stone of Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway on January 5. The project worth Rs 1935.34 crore has already been approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and is expected to be completed. till 2023.
The expressway will start from Amausi airport in Lucknow and will connect with the proposed ring road at Kanpur via Unnao. The 13-km-long section of the 63-km-long six-lane expressway will be elevated and reduce the total travel time between the two cities from about 1.5 hours to about 55 minutes.
An interesting fact about the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is that it will use 3D Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) technology. It will be the first expressway in India to use 3D AMG technology for construction of highways.
What is 3D AMG technology and how does it work?
3D AMG technology involves using 3D engineered models to guide construction work. It uses 3D modeling data along with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to provide real-time guidance for the construction of a highway using a host of automated machines. A machine using AMG technology uses a combination of GPS, robotic stations and lasers to determine the position of cutting edges or pavement molds. It then creates a 3D model for the highway, which is then refined using a computer-user interface.
An official of the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) told The Times of India that the computer evaluates the ground position of the machine relative to the proposed position of the machine in the 3D model. The operator then uses the information from the on-board computer to control the position of the machine (and construction of the highway) with minimal input from the operator.
What are the benefits of using 3D AMG technology?
The use of 3D AMG technology makes the overall process automated and more efficient. Using 3D AMG technology, the contractor will be able to monitor the development in real time on his phone and computer. It will also reduce construction time and the overall cost of the project while reducing error margins and improving worker safety.
