The Government of India wants to focus on making social media accountable. Recently, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that social media is a “very powerful medium” and how to make it accountable is “a very valid question”. He further said that an ecosystem is being created across the world and in India.
The Union Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics and Information Technology said that self-regulation is the first step towards making social media accountable, followed by industry regulation and then government regulations.
“Social media is a very powerful medium. Social media has a huge impact on our lives. How to make it accountable has become a very valid question around the world. Across the world, countries and societies are moving towards making social media accountable,” he said while interacting with media persons on the sidelines of an event.
How social media can be held accountable
Asked about ways to make social media accountable, the minister said the first step is self-regulation.
“Any such content which has a harmful effect on the society should be removed. Next comes industry regulation and then government regulation,” he said.
After interacting with startups and students at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Vaishnav said, “All over the world and even in our country, an ecosystem, a thought process should be created to make social media accountable. has been.”
He also highlighted the need for a “fair system” where the content creator gets his dues when social media platforms like Facebook benefit by sharing it.
A person who works hard to create content should also get a share of the profit and revenue if social media like Facebook benefits, he said. “This kind of thinking is also gaining momentum,” the minister said.
“So, how to create a fair system, because this (social media) is a huge progress. How everyone becomes a part of this progress, and how is it held accountable – work is increasingly being done on these issues around the world,” he said.
