YouTube will now let users create remixes of up to 5 seconds of YouTube or shorts in their own shorts with the help of a new toolkit. According to the company, “create your own short videos using our shorts creation tool to mix in music from our audio library or use original audio from videos on YouTube”.
In particular, shorts created by users with audio taken from the Platform will be attributed to the original video of the source creator. according to youtubeCreators also have the option to opt-out of YouTube Studio if they do not want their videos to be remixed. It’s worth noting that music videos containing copyrighted material from YouTube’s official music partners are not eligible to be remixed.
The feature is now available for iOS users and will be rolled out for Android users later this year.

- Open YouTube app on phone
- Go to the related video or short whose audio you want to sample
- Tap on the menu with three dots and select “Cut”
- For longer format videos, you’ll need to tap the “Create” button and then “Cut” from the remix options
Specifically, users can choose which part of the video they want to use in the short. Earlier, users could split short audio clips from videos on YouTube. However, now, users will be able to clip 1 to 5 second segments from eligible videos and shorts and use them in their own shorts.
In addition, YouTube also announced that the shorts are now available via the web and tablet. These shorts will appear in a new Shorts tab, which will be rolling out to all devices in the coming weeks.
For those unaware, YouTube is testing a new way to enable users to react to videos. The company has started testing a feature called Timed Emoji that will enable viewers to react with an emoji at a specific moment in a video.
