The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a new order that may help prepaid users to get cheaper plans. TRAI has taken this step to accept the complaints of the users. Some users expressed their concerns about the tariff offer of 28 days validity and multiples of it. For example, most of the carriers offer validity of 14 days, 28 days, 56 days, 84 days. TRAI has ordered providers to issue prepaid plans with a validity of 30 days.

Does this mean that all plans with a validity of 28 days will be upgraded in 30 days?

This may not be the case. The government has asked carriers to offer at least one plan voucher, one special tariff voucher and one combo voucher with a validity of thirty days.

Additionally, the carriers have been asked to offer at least one plan voucher, one special tariff voucher and one combo voucher that will be renewable on the same date of every month. Its purpose is to provide more clarity regarding the dates for the users.

According to TRAI, telecom subscribers will have more options to choose the service offerings of suitable validity and duration. It will also help consumers make more informed tariff-related choices.

Why do carriers offer 28 days instead of 30 days?

It will surprise you how much impact the 28-day validity has as compared to the 30-day validity. With a validity of 28 days, users will have to charge 13 times in a year. If Airtel, Vodafone and Jio decide to go with the 30-day plan instead, the user will only recharge for 12 months. These companies get revenue of thousands of crores from one month extra recharge.

The same problem can be seen in plans that come with quarterly validity. Carriers miss out on offering 90-day validity, instead, users will have to opt for 30 days. This also ends the validity of 29 days in a year. With the new order, users will have a clear idea about the time period and their annual expenditure on prepaid plans.
