Twitter owner Elon Musk has started following Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter. On Monday, a screenshot showing the name of PM Modi in the list of 195 persons surfaced and attracted attention on the micro-blogging platform.

With 134.3 million followers, Musk is the most followed person on Twitter. Musk recently surpassed former US President Barack Obama (132 million followers) as the most followed person on the platform. With 87.7 million followers, Prime Minister Modi is one of the most followed leaders on Twitter. However, Musk’s follow-up is unusual. The list of accounts he follows includes a mix of people, organizations, and even accounts that tweet primarily memes.

Apart from Obama, Musk has been associated with his mother Maye Musk, Joe Rogan who is famous for stirring up controversies through his podcasts, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, Spotify founder Daniel Ek, Follows “Game of Thrones”. author George RR Martin, and environmental activist Greta Thunberg among others.

Several users on Twitter expressed their views on the development.

One user commented, “It would be great for PM Modi to strengthen his relationship with Elon as we see India as the fifth most polluted country in the world.”

“Totally make sense. India is still the largest country in the Indian subcontinent and the second most populous country on Earth – if those numbers didn’t change over the weekend,” said another user.

Musk’s follower on PM Modi’s Twitter account fuels yet another speculation that may be related to Tesla’s entry into India. For years, Tesla, one of the world’s most popular car brands owned by Musk, has been trying to start operations in India. It has lobbied to sell its entry-level cars in India, but Tesla has been turned down by the government’s mandate for a foreign brand to enter the country. Modi met Musk in 2015 during a visit to the Tesla factory in San Jose, California, US. The purpose of the meeting was to explore Tesla’s Solar Powerwall battery technology.
