COVID-19 precautionary dose from today: Here’s how to register, check eligibility and more

As COVID cases continue to rise with the rapid spread of the highly transmissive omicron variant in India, the country is gearing up to fight the battle with a new booster drive. While studies (as per reports) have suggested that a booster or ‘precautionary dose’ can help counter the new variant, India has started giving booster shots to people over 60 years of age, health and frontline workers. Those eligible for the dose will not require any registration and can simply walk. However, to avoid hassle, it is advisable to register on the Coin portal. Here is a simple guide on precautionary dosage, eligibility, and how to get slots for documents and other details.

How to Register for Precautionary Dosage in the Coin Portal

Step 1: Open the COWIN website- cowin.gov.in, go to the COWIN tab, and tap on the Vaccination option.

Step 2: On the next page, you will be asked to enter the registered mobile (which you used for the last two vaccine shots). An OTP will appear on the home screen, enter the numbers to log in.

Step 3: Once you are logged in, the site will show if you are eligible for the precautionary dose in the appointment module.

Step 4: Tap on the ‘Precautionary Dose’ tab and then choose an appointment based on your location, and then click on Book Appointment. Once it is confirmed, you can download the details from the app.


Talking about the eligibility, the precaution/booster dose will be available as per the requirement of Cow Registered Health Care Worker (HWC) or Front Line Worker (FLW) or citizen above 60 years. However, one should note that the new dosage option will only be available to those who received a second vaccine nine months or 39 weeks ago. As per reports, 90 per cent of the eligible population of the country has been vaccinated with a dose of the Kovid-19 vaccine.

Required Documents

To avoid hassle, Cowin recommends carrying a photo ID for appointments and the mobile number registered on Vaccine Boot. Once a session is booked, you cannot cancel it, however, the site does provide an option to reschedule it.

Note: As a precaution, senior citizens who have co-morbidities should take precaution/booster dosage only after medical advice.
