During a press conference earlier on Saturday, January 8, the ECI (Election Commission of India) announced the dates for the upcoming assembly elections in five electoral states – Punjab, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Uttarakhand.

Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra highlighted the process of making the upcoming Assembly Election 2022 process online amid rising cases of COVID-19. India crossed the daily 1 lakh mark of coronavirus cases on Friday.

To conduct the election process digitally, CEC talks about three apps – Suvidha, cVigil, and Know Your Candidate. Chandra said that the Election Commission has zero tolerance towards misuse of government machinery for elections. He urged voters to use c-Vigil app to report misuse of election machinery like violation of model code of conduct etc.

What is cVigil App?

The cVigil app is available for free download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. On App Store, cVIGIL app developed by ECI is rated with 2.4 stars only. At the same time, the app has been given a 4 star rating on the Play Store.

Chandra said the c-Vigil application should be used by voters to report any incidents of violation of model code of conduct, distribution of funds and free gifts. Election commission officials will reach the crime scene within 100 minutes of the complaint.

According to the app listing, cVIGIL emphasizes “to stand for Vigilant Citizen and play an active and responsible role in the conduct of free and fair elections”. The app “provides time-stamped evidence of model code of conduct/expense violation, along with live photos/videos along with auto location data.”

With the help of this app, ECI aims to “fill in all these gaps and create a fast-track grievance reception and redressal system”.

What is Suvidha App?

Chandra has also developed Suvidha App for all political parties and candidates contesting elections for online nomination by ECI. “The alternative facility of online enrollment has been given to the candidates. We want the candidates to use it so that there is less physical contact,” he said.

“It is mandatory for political parties to upload on their websites detailed information about persons with pending criminal cases selected as election candidates. He will also have to give a reason for selecting the candidate,” Chandra said during the press conference.

At the moment should not know about this app.

In addition to this, the Chief Election Commissioner also announced that voters can get detailed information about the candidate through the Know Your Candidate App.
