Apple will eliminate the iPhone 15 Pro SIM card slot

Apple launched the iPhone 13 series in September this year which includes iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The company is slated to launch the iPhone 14 series around this time next year. Ahead of the launch of the iPhone 14 series, which is just months away, reports have already started detailing the features that the 2023 iPhones are expected to get. Now, a new report talks about the SIM card slot of the iPhone 15 series.

According to the report of a Portuguese blog site called Blog do iPhone (Via GSM Arena), Apple is planning to remove the physical SIM card slot from the Pro model in its 2023 iPhones. Instead, the company plans to use eSIM technology to provide connectivity. If this is true, then the 2023 iPhone Pro models, which are likely to be called the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, will come without a SIM card slot.

The report states that the iPhone 15 Pro models will come with dual eSIM support, which will allow users to use two phone numbers simultaneously. At the moment, Apple’s iPhones feature an eSIM with a slot for a physical SIM card. Notably, while the iPhone 15 Pro model is tipped to get dual eSIM support, it is unclear whether the non-Pro models will also get the same functionality or if they will continue to use the physical SIM card slot.

What could this mean for future iPhones?

Tipsters have long tipped Apple to work on a portless iPhone. While reports in the past have suggested a different timeline for the debut of a portless iPhone, one rumor is never-ending. If Apple is indeed planning to remove the physical SIM card slot from its 2023 iPhone models, it could be part of its longer strategy to introduce a portless iPhone.

The report comes at a time when the European Commission is planning to ask smartphone makers and other electronic equipment makers to opt for a common USB Type-C port on their devices. Apple has traditionally shied away from offering a USB Type-C port on its iPhones, even though it has included the port on many iPad and Mac models.

Furthermore, Apple first introduced Qi wireless charging technology to its iPhones in 2017 with the launch of the iPhone 8 series and iPhone X. Then in 2020, the company introduced a host of MagSafe-branded wireless charging devices. All of this combined could mean that Apple is getting closer to offering a portless iPhone as an upgrade or device at a time. But of course, nothing can be said with certainty until Apple comments on the matter.
