In 2020, Apple made several announcements at its iPhone launch event. These announcements were mostly sweet until the American brand announced that they would stop offering the charging brick with the phone. This decision was made for environmental reasons. Now, we have an estimate of how much Apple has managed to save by simply removing the charging brick from the packaging.
A report in Daily Mail claimed that Apple saved 5 billion pounds (over Rs 50,000 crore) by simply removing the charging brick from the box. During the Apple launch event in 2020, the company announced the move, claiming that it would provide a positive impact on the company’s carbon footprint.
Apple did not pass on the benefits and cost-savings to its iPhone buyers, as the price of the device remained the same as in previous generations. Apple also benefited from the slimmer box. The company was able to ship around 70 percent more units at the same location. This has resulted in further savings on the part of the company.
Apple had announced that the company would remove the power adapter and EarPods from the iPhone packaging. This was done in exchange for reducing carbon emissions and avoiding the mining and use of the precious material, which enables smaller and lighter packaging. Apple claimed that with this in mind, these changes managed to cut carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons annually, which is equivalent to taking about 4,50,000 cars off the road per year.
Apple failed to mention the monetary benefits caused by the lack of a charging brick and EarPods. Currently, Apple sells a 20W charging brick at a price of Rs 1,900. The EarPods with Lightning connector and the EarPods with the regular 3.5mm headphone jack are both priced at Rs 1,900.
Several of Apple’s competitors ridiculed it for removing the charging brick from the packaging. However, some of them soon followed the same strategy. With Apple’s ability to change industry standards, we can expect more OEMs to take this route in the future.
