Due to the change in India’s energy efficiency rating norms, it is going to be costly to buy five star rated air conditioners (ACs) in India with effect from July 1, 2022. Energy rating rules for air conditioners will change next month, making the country’s energy rating stricter by one level.
Due to this change, the energy rating of existing air conditioners will be reduced by one star. This means that air conditioners that have so far been rated five stars will be rated four stars from July 1, when the new norms come into force. Additionally, the price of five-star rated air conditioners in India will be higher as the cost of producing more energy efficient air conditioners will increase significantly. According to a report in The Economic Times, the cost of five-star rated ACs is expected to increase by seven to 10 per cent from next month.
Why this change in energy rating?
It is worth noting that these changes are a part of new energy efficiency standards set by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Government of India, which require air conditioners in the country to be smarter in energy or electricity consumption and to be more consumer friendly than older models. As a part of these changes, the energy rating of all air conditioners manufactured before June 30, 2022 will be phased out and will be rated one step lower than their originals. On the other hand, new air conditioners manufactured after June 30, 2022 will get a five-star rating which is in line with the updated standards.
“Please note that all existing models are valid only till June 30, 2022 and will automatically expire after the expiry of the validity period,” BEE said. wrote in a circular.
Interestingly, BEE also detailed the time when this upcoming energy efficiency standard will come to an end. According to a circular shared by the organization, the new standard will be applicable from July 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024, after which the five-star devices will be rated a step lower as per the new standard.
It is worth noting that earlier, the new standard was earlier scheduled to come into effect on November 10, 2022. However, the manufacturers urged the organization to defer the change for six months so that they can clear their inventory.
