Twitter banned 44,611 accounts promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity in India between September 26 and October 25, since Elon Musk took over. Earlier, between August 26 and September 25, the company had banned 52,141 such bad accounts in India. The micro-blogging platform, which is undergoing a churn under Musk, also suspended 4,014 accounts for allegedly promoting terrorism in the country.

Twitter, in its monthly report on compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021, said it received 582 complaints from users in India in the same time frame through its complaint redressal mechanism and took action on only 20 URLs out of them.

This is a sharp contrast from the earlier period (26 August and 25 September), when Twitter received 157 complaints from users in India and took action on 129 URLs.

In its new report, Twitter said it took action on 61 complaints appealing Twitter account suspensions. “These have all been resolved and an appropriate response has been sent,” Twitter said.

“We did not reverse the suspension of any of these accounts after reviewing the specifics of the situation. All accounts remain suspended. We also received 12 requests regarding general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period,” the company said.

In October, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal had said that Twitter’s responses to child pornography complaints were incomplete and the commission was not satisfied with them.

Musk has already expressed serious concern over reports about the presence of tweets seeking child pornography on Twitter. Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish monthly compliance reports.
